Caught in the Accent!

Hey hey,

In my weekend post, I mentioned that I went to Salon Day Out this past Sunday. When I got there, the venue was pretty full but not as crowded as it eventually got (big ups to Dabs!). Anyways, while the first part of the program was underway, I was in the audience moving around, taking pictures and chatting with a few people. At some point, I stood near this guy who struck up a conversation. He asked about my camera, kinda dissed my photography skills and made some weird remarks about some of females in attendance - he was trying to be funny. After a few minutes, I moved on to another part of the room.

Anyways, maybe an hour later, it was my turn on stage, so that Dabs and the Savvy Chic Hair and Beauty Team could complete the instant faux locs. It turned out the guy from earlier was the MC (not a funny one, I might add), and during the different presentations, he asked questions to keep the audience engaged. So he asks me something (I can't remember), and I answered. The next thing I hear from him is...

"Ah ah, what happened to your accent?! Aren't you the same person I was gisting with earlier?"

Apparently when I chatted with him earlier, I used a Nigerian accent, and when I was on stage, a mixed Naijamerican accent came on. On one hand, I wanted to be like "Uncle, how far? Why you gorra hembarrazz me on stage?", and on the other hand, I wanted to ask, "So blurry what?" But honestly, I don't even know when the accent changed. I don't do it deliberately at all. I can start a sentence with one accent and end with a different one. In fact, if you allow me, I'll even throw in a [fake] British accent because I like to play around, INNIT?! :p

So if I ever meet you and my accent does it's rollercoaster thing, just allow me, okay? It's not on purpose.

Peace out!

    1. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!! Funny thing is when I get annoyed, Atlanta hoodrat comes out!

    2. When I first moved to Atlanta, I started saying "yall" right away. It is still one of my favourite words. Stick that in the middle of a standard English accent and people just thought I was crazy. Now I just sound like a Cali girl who lived in the south but grew up with English family...I think

    3. I love to say y'all. There's something about a proper Southern accent that's lilting. LOL @ your mix of accents. I remember at one point, no matter where I was in the world, I had an accent.

  4. Lolll! It's your life and your mouth; speak with whatever accent makes you happy! I feel you on the accent changing mid conversation though; I can totally relate. My accent depends on how passionate I am about the subject, lol.

  5. My dear - my coworkers have turned into a running joke. They can tell when I am annoyed or tired. Now that I go to a Nigerian church I sound less Queen's English/Southern/Anchorwoman-ish and more Nigerian IMO. I've sounded "other" since I was in primary school. But then my church folk still laugh at me when I say I sound proper Nigerian, lol. It is well...I can now laugh at myself.

The worst was when I was supposed to give a friend a ride somewhere one day, only to get there and hear one message that some oyinbo chick left saying she was on the way. I started "raking" because I could have slept in. Only for him to be like "you do realise that was your message" *faint*

  8. It happens to many people. When I am nervous i "can" like to sound American. Likewise when i am really upset. But if i am feeling ok, what i think is my Nigerian accent shows up.

  11. LOL. I don't know if u noticed but that is typical of africans who grew up in a country other than their home country. Same goes with me i can easily switch between a zambian accent and zambian/western accent because of my upbringing. And a lot of the time i dont even notice it. Don't take it to heart, it's just one of the quirks of growing up in more than one country. Mr MC would never understand.
